Chapter 16

Rose

I wanted to get a huge fishing rod, and reel the words back in, but it was too late. They were out in the world, and had grown a life of their own. Fuck. Fox had stopped in his tracks, and was now turning away from the door to face me.

He studied me for a long moment, narrowing his eyes while he seemed to assess every fiber of my being. “What’s going on?” He was still looking at me, but for some reason I felt like he was talking to Kane, rather than me.

“I don’t know. Something though, right? I could see it in her face as soon as I came back from classes. That freaked-out look.” Kane picked up on Fox’s train of thought quickly, and as ever, I marveled at the bond and chemistry they shared. I’d never seen anything like it between friends before.

“Guys, I’m standing right here,” I reminded them.

“We know.” They spoke at the same time.

“So are you going to tell us what’s happening with you? Or not?” A look of concern flicked across Fox’s face, mirroring Kane’s expression when he’d first entered the room.

I hugged myself tight, wrapping my arms around my body like vines around a tree trunk.

“Are you going to stay or not?” The challenge was clear in my words.

“If you promise to tell us what’s up, yes.”

“Stay then.”

“Okay.” He nodded, striding back into the room. When he got to the table, he stopped, surprising me by pulling out a chair and sitting down. “So let’s do this properly, like grown-ups or whatever the fuck. Sit.” He looked at Kane and me, but neither of us moved. “I said sit your asses the fuck down. How hard is it to conduct a conversation around a fucking table?” We moved toward him, and sat, as instructed. “Rose, what’s the deal?”

I took a deep breath, then lifted the small ceramic fruit bowl in the middle of the table. “I found this today.” I moved it to one side to reveal the torn card fragments, and turned from side to side to watch each of them as they leaned forward to take in what was in front of them.

“Found it where? In your backpack again?”

“No, that’s the thing. I only use the backpack for school. The rest of the time I carry a purse.

“So it was in your purse?” Kane looked understandably confused.

“No. It was under the doormat.”

“The doormat.” Fox drew the words out agonizingly slowly. “You mean here? Inside the building where you live?”

I nodded. “Yeah. The others have all been in my backpack, therefore, obviously on days when I’ve been at school, and while I’ve never been aware of anyone near my stuff, except you”—She looked pointedly at each of us—“and I’ve tried to keep it clutched to me and secure at all times, I guess there have been moments when it could have happened, especially in the halls during those hectic changes between classes. But now I’m not going into college, I guess they had to step up their efforts and find another way.
